I Like My President

April 29, 2025 -- Unlike many today ... I really like my college’s president, Dartmouth’s Sian Beilock. I recently hosted her at a class on leadership at Stanford Business School, where I have taught for the last seven years.

She showed up two days after refusing to sign a letter to the White House defending Harvard; one that many other college presidents signed … though plenty of others, including the presidents of Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and University of Chicago did not.

The debate in class was robust ... the students didn’t hold back. But Sian was not defensive. Instead, she gave us a MasterClass on grace and clarity. “Who is the customer of Dartmouth College?” asked one student. This is a provocative question indeed. “The American people,” she replied. What an amazing thought ... schools might actually serve a broader purpose.
